Leigh Adams - No Time To Celebrate
Despite finishing his best ever world championship season as world
number 2, FACOM Sponsored Leigh Adams has no time to celebrate as
he now faces a number of high pressure race meetings.
36 year old Adams, still visibly struggling with a recently dislocated
collarbone, rode bravely in Slovenia to accrue 9 points and seal
the championship silver he had aimed for once first place was out
of reach. It was then straight back to the UK to prepare for Monday’s
Elite League Play-Off first leg, which Leigh’s Swindon team
won 49 – 43 over Coventry in front of a massive crowd.
It is probably a slightly smaller lead than the Robins had hoped
for, but Adams was fairly calm as he looked toward the second leg
in a week’s time; “It could have been better, but at
one stage there it looked as though it could have been worse. I
got beaten in the last race, but considering the condition of my
body I have to be satisfied.”
And now that he has secured the world number 2 spot, how does he
feel? “It’s a funny feeling really. It has been a great
season for me and to win three rounds is really satisfying. The
only thing is, that when you are in with a chance of winning two
thirds of the way through the season, but don’t, there is
still a degree of disappointment. Everybody wants to be world champion
and I am no different, but I’m not unhappy with things as
they are. I’m in great form and the second best rider in the
world, so at 36 years of age I don’t have much to complain
about.”
Adams’ future has been the subject of much discussion this
year, but he had only this to say; “I’ve had a good
time this year and I got a bit of a taste for the victory champagne.
My wife Kylie and I are discussing the future at the moment and
when we’ve worked everything out we will make a definitive
statement. At the moment though, I’ve got some critical league
matches to win and a $100,000 grand prix!”
