Adams Victory
in Latvia
Following
his second successive Grand Prix victory, this time in Latvia, FACOM®
sponsored Leigh Adams has refuted suggestions that Championship
leader Nicki Pedersen can just ‘go through the motions’
and win the world title. Adams picked up a further 3 points on Pedersen
on the weekend and the gap between the two is now 21 points with
3 rounds remaining. Adams said; “I’m amazed that
people think like that in a sport that is so cut and thrust. If
I pick up 7 points per round for the next three we will be equal
and that is far from impossible. There are 24 points on offer for
an unbeaten run through a meeting and that cannot be ruled out –
Nicki has done it twice. If I finish the season the way he started
it then things are going to get very interesting.”
Adams was supreme in Latvia, scoring 13 points from his five qualifying
rides before convincingly winning his semi and the final.
The Grand Prix Series now moves on to the world’s number
1 speedway race track, Bydgoszcz, in Poland. Bydgoszcz has been
a happy hunting ground for local hero Tomasz Gollob and also Nicki
Pedersen in recent years, but Adams does not see that as a problem;
“I’ve ridden some very good races around Bydgoszcz,
but never really done it with any consistency. I usually struggled
with wheel spin, but the characteristics of my GM engines this year
will be very suited to the conditions there this time and I’m
quietly confident of continuing my winning run – I mean it’s
not like I have a choice if I want to win the World Title is it?”
Adams has also been touched by the wave of support he has coming
out of Australia, something he’s never really felt to this
degree in the past; “It’s incredible to think that
people are up in the middle of the night following my fortunes on
the internet and via text message. When I look back on my racing
career it’ll be little things like that, that will make me
very glad that I chose this career path all those years ago. I knew
I had fans in Australia, but I’m just blown away by what is
happening at the moment", he concluded.
